    Predators, Prey & Food Chains KS 1, 2, First, Second, Stage. Ages 5 - 11 DURATION: 45 mins - 55 mins ​ OVERVIEW: Food chains are a very delicate balance - each species is dependent on the others around it. If the balance becomes upset, drastic things can happen! ​ This workshop looks at feeding connections (what-eats-what) in an ecological community. We examine herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and learn how to classify non-living and living things. Pupils discover where energy comes from and how the consumer resource system can cause the disruption of a food web. Learning Outcomes All children will understand key words, such as ‘predator’, ‘prey’, ‘carnivore’, etc. Most children will be able to explain that energy is passed up a food chain. A food chain shows how a series of living things depend on each other as a food source for energy! ​ All food chains start with a producer - a producer is an organism that makes its own food, i.e plants (they get their energy from the sun). A living thing that eats a producer or another living thing is called a consumer. ​ A food chain shows how organisms are related to each other by the food they eat. Predators eat multiple different types of prey - this results in multiple food chains joining together to create a food web. ​ Changes in an ecosystem can disrupt a food chain; adjustments to one population will have a knock on effect along the entire chain. This can be caused by climate change, natural disasters, human interference and disease.     Chinese New Year EYFS, KS1; Early Years, First Stage. Ages 3- 11 ​ ​ DURATION: 45 mins - 55 mins ​ OVERVIEW: Learn about Chinese New Year the ZooLab way! We bring some of the animals that feature on the Chinese calendar and you’ll also hear about the other ZooLab animals that didn’t make it across the river to be one of the select group. ​ Linking to literacy skills, science and geographical knowledge, young children get to hear a story that illustrates that there is more than one way of looking at the world. Chinese New Year, doesn’t start on the 1st January; instead it is marked by the start of the new moon (Chinese New Year is often referred to as the Lunar New Year). The date changes every year but always falls 21 January - 20 February. ​ The new moon marks the start of the Spring Festival - a 16 day celebration to mark the beginning of spring. Families come together, banquets and parades are held, fireworks and red lanterns can be seen on the streets around China and red envelopes are given to children by their elders.     Classification KS 2, 3; Second, Third, Fourth Stage. Ages 7 - 14 DURATION: 45 mins - 55 mins ​ OVERVIEW: There are millions of living things in the world! Scientists put living things into groups to make it easier to study and learn more about them. During ZooLab’s ‘Classification’ workshop, we will explore different animals and learn how they are classed. This hands-on, animal-handling workshop experience brings pupils face to face with classification. It is all part of an experiential and interactive learning experience in which introduces ZooLab animals that include vertebrates and invertebrates. Pupils explore different classes of animal so they can uncover their differences and similarities themselves. Vertebrates have a backbone, while invertebrates are those which don't. In all, there are more than 800,000 animal species in the Kingdom Animalia and most of them are included in the phylum of Arthropod i.e. invertebrates. Usually, people don't think of earthworms or jellyfish as animals, but actually they are, thereby making the animal kingdom classification extremely huge.     Rainforest Adventurer EYFS, KS 1. Early Years, First Stage. Ages 4 - 7 DURATION: 45 mins - 55 mins ​ OVERVIEW: Go on an action-packed adventure through the rainforest layers with ZooLab’s expert Ranger! Rainforests are Earth’s oldest living ecosystem! They can be found on every continent except Antarctica and have an annual rainfall greater than two meters. ​ There are two different types of rainforest - temperate and tropical. Tropical rainforests are found near the equator and have an average daily temperature of 28°C - the hot, humid atmosphere creates a unique ecosystem full of biodiversity. ​ Rainforests consist of four layers: the forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent layer. Rainforests once covered 14% of Earth’s surface but this has plummeted to 6% - it is estimated that we lose one and a half acres every second! With over half the planet’s species residing here, it is vital that humanity protects this important resource.     Life Cycles EYFS, KS 1, 2. Early Years, First, Second Stage. Ages 3 - 11 DURATION: 45 mins - 55 mins ​ OVERVIEW: This workshop uses ZooLab animals to discuss new life, growth, reproduction and ageing as we follow several different animal life cycles. ​ Designed to complement the curriculum topics of Animals including humans and Living things and their habitats, there’s a particular focus on the metamorphosis of a butterfly and the various stages of its development. ​ Some key vocabulary is introduced including ‘metamorphosis’, ‘larva’, ‘chrysalis’, ‘adult’ and ‘reproduce’. Learning Outcomes All children will understand that animals have babies, which grow into adults. Most children will understand that lifecycles vary between animals and be able to explain some. Some children will be able to explain that reproduction produces offspring and these offspring usually vary from their parents.   • Minibeasts (EYFS)

    Minibeasts (EYFS) EYFS, KS 1, 2; Early Years, First, Second Stage. Ages 3 - 11 DURATION: 45 mins - 55 mins OVERVIEW: Minibeasts have existed for around 550 million years and make up approximately 97% of creatures on Earth! In fact, the UK alone is home to 25,000 different species - these little creatures are quite a big deal. Let’s look at Minibeasts together! During ZooLab’s workshop, children get a fun introduction to invertebrates and classification. They get to question, investigate and learn about scientific discovery. This workshop answers all the big questions such as - What do Minibeasts have inside them? Book Now! What is a Minibeast? A Minibeast is a creature without a backbone. In fact, Minibeasts don’t have any bones at all - their bodies have different structures for movement and protection. Invertebrates come in many shapes and sizes, living in a variety of different habitats in almost all parts of the world. Mollusics Snails, slugs, octopuses. Soft bodied. No legs. Annelids Worms, leeches. Many body segments. No legs. Coelenterate Jellyfish, coral, sea anemones. Aquatic and single internal cavity. Echinoderm Starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins. Aquatic and hard, spiny covering/skins. The next group is so big it has to be broken down further! Arthropods - the largest phylum of creatures on Earth have an exoskeleton, a segmented body and paired jointed legs.
