You will receive full presentation and animal husbandry & welfare training, as well as specialist training in working with our various audience groups. You will also receive a robust accredited training programme which will be ongoing throughout your time with the company. Your territory will comprise of around a 60 mile circumference of your home postcode (dependant on area), and you will use your own vehicle to travel to booked appointments. This position may involve working within Central Manchester as well as outer boroughs. ​ In return you will receive reimbursement of petrol expenses as well as car allowance to cover any maintenance costs of the vehicle. ​ You will keep a selection of animals at home with you, all animals, equipment and general set up will be provided and full support given locally. ​ You will need an Animal Activities Licence to operate as an Educational Animal Presenter in England. Scientists put living things into groups to make it easier to study and learn more about them. During ZooLab’s ‘Classification’ workshop, we will explore different animals and learn how they are classed. This hands-on, animal-handling workshop experience brings pupils face to face with classification. It is all part of an experiential and interactive learning experience which introduces ZooLab animals that include vertebrates and invertebrates. Pupils explore different classes of animal so they can uncover their differences and similarities themselves. Classifying animals basically means dividing them into two main groups - vertebrates and invertebrates. ​ Vertebrates have a backbone, while invertebrates are those which don't. In all, there are more than 800,000 animal species in the Kingdom Animalia and most of them are included in the phylum of Arthropod i.e. invertebrates. Usually, people don't think of earthworms or jellyfish as animals, but actually they are, thereby making the animal kingdom classification extremely huge.     Giant African land snail Achatina fulica Classification: Gastropod Previous Lifespan: 6-10 years ​ Threats: Hermit crab, coconut crab and some bird species ​ Distribution: East Africa ​ Habitat: Forest floor ​ Appearance: Giant African land snails can grow up to 12 cm in length and weight up to 600 g. They can be identified by their mottled brown, conical-shaped shells which have vertical stripes and a yellow foot ​ Diet & Feeding: Leaf litter ​ Social Behaviour: Giant African land snails are nocturnal, moving around at night to feed. With the exception of mating, snails spend much of their time alone ​ Males and females: The giant African land snails are hermaphrodite which means that they have both male and female the reproduction organs ​ Number of young: They lay about 200 eggs ​ Interesting fact: Giant African land snails can drastically reduce its metabolism and survive for a few months or even a few years without food Next

    Chilean rose tarantula Grammostola rosea Classification: Arachnid Previous Lifespan: Females live round 20 years. Males live around 2-4 years ​ Size: Maximum of around 6 inches in length ​ Threats: Birds, reptiles, mammals ​ Distribution: Native to Chile ​ Habitat: Desert and scrub habitats ​ Appearance: The overall color is brown to black with rose-hued hair on the hard-shell upper body. A tarantulas fangs fold under the body, meaning that it must strike downward to impale its prey ​ Diet & Feeding: Nocturnal predator of small arthropods. Prey is injected with venom and enzymes that begin breaking it down into ingestible fluids ​ Social Behaviour: They live solitary lives in small underground burrows ​ Males and females: The female is often bigger than the male and also tends to be more aggressive ​ Lifespan: 15-20 years ​ Number of young: The female produces large egg sacs, usually containing in excess of 500 eggs. The female will carry the egg sack under her body protecting it until the eggs have hatched ​ Interesting fact: Unlike other most other spiders, tarantulas do not catch prey in webs. This workshop teaches us about recycling, using examples from the animal and insect world. Rainforest Adventurer Go on an action-packed adventure through the rainforest layers and meet animals along the way. It’s all part of an approach that combines storytelling and drama to bring the rainforest to life, help children discover biodiversity. Naturetown 'Naturetown' is a rhyming adventure, following eco-warriors in a crusade to help their local wildlife - investigating issues of pollution, deforestation and litter. We look at how we can protect and care for our animal friends. Ben in the Glen Follow Ben through his home in the glen as he explores the changes and wildlife of the seasons and learn how he records his findings in his nature book. Meet some ZooLab animals linked with the seasons along the way. Our Senses Join Henry as he explores how animals use their senses within their habitats. Our story looks at human's five senses to link to how animals perceive and adapt to their surroundings. All ZooLab workshops can incorporate PECS Animal Flash Cards. This allows each workshop participant to feel safe and secure in knowing what is coming next. Presenter Style We all know that too much information can be overwhelming! Our presenters have been trained to communicate in bite size chunks. Working with you Our presenters will always consult the teacher present to ensure we are presenting in a fashion that suits your pupils. Sessions can last 30-60 minutes with up to 15 pupils. Darwin’s theory of natural selection During his visit to the Galapágos Islands, Charles Darwin noted the variety of life between the different islands. ​ 28 years after his expedition, Darwin released has theory of evolution by natural selection; challenging the religious views of the time. Studying the Galapágos finches, mockingbirds and tortoises, Darwin observed that differences in characteristics could be seen between islands. ​ Those which had evolved with adaptions best suited to their habitat were more likely to survive and breed, passing these characteristics on to the next generation (inheritance) to ensure survival of the species. Chinese New Year, doesn’t start on the 1st January; instead it is marked by the start of the new moon (Chinese New Year is often referred to as the Lunar New Year). The date changes every year but always falls 21 January - 20 February. ​ The new moon marks the start of the Spring Festival - a 16 day celebration to mark the beginning of spring. Families come together, banquets and parades are held, fireworks and red lanterns can be seen on the streets around China and red envelopes are given to children by their elders.
