KS 1, 2; First, Second Stage.
Ages 5 - 11

DURATION: 45 mins - 55 mins

OVERVIEW: The ocean is one huge watery expanse with many features – it is vital to all life on Earth, both in the sea and on land. Our ride is here, so let’s climb aboard the submarine and dive right in!

Guided by your ZooLab Ranger and virtual ocean resident, we uncover why the ocean is essential and how we can protect it. Pupils explore the sea zones where we discover each unique ecosystem and learn about its inhabitants and how they have adapted to survive.

Key Workshop Objectives:

  • Explore and determine the key features of each ocean zone

  • Discuss adaptations of marine animals

  • Explain why oceans are vital for life on Earth

  • Examine the reasons for ocean pollution and what we can do to help

  • Compare ZooLab’s animals to those found in the ocean

Why are oceans important?

Oceans are a significant ecosystem, accounting for 2/3 of the Earth’s surface. Oceans help to regulate the climate by producing 50% of our oxygen, absorbing CO2 and regulating temperature. It provides food, resources and jobs, contributing to the global economy.

But sadly, oceans are under threat from pollution. About 8 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year, causing damage to marine life. Chemical pollution causes large blooms of harmful algae, which can be toxic to animals and people. Overfishing is another problem; huge commercial fishing trawlers patrol the waters with large nets sweeping through the sea, catching hundreds

of thousands of fish and more endangered marine life like turtles and sharks.
