What do mice eat?... And other questions

What do mice eat?
Wild mice like grains, seeds, and fruits and will eat meat or carrion when available.
Pet mice need a balanced diet of mouse food and a small amount of fruit and vegetables.
What do mice need to survive?
In the UK, the Animal Welfare Act 2006 defines five key welfare needs that pet owners must meet to ensure their animals are healthy and happy
Health – Protection from pain, injury, suffering, and disease, with prompt treatment if the animal becomes ill or injured.
Behaviour – The ability to express natural behaviours, such as running, playing, digging, or flying, depending on the species.
Companionship – Appropriate social housing, either with other animals for social species or alone for solitary species.
Diet – A suitable diet tailored to the animal’s life stage, species, and activity level, including access to fresh, clean water.
Environment – A safe, comfortable, and stimulating environment, including space to exercise, rest, and hide, appropriate to the species and individual needs. Meeting these needs ensures animals can thrive physically and mentally, and failure to do so can result in legal action under the Act.
What is the lifespan of a house mouse?
The average lifespan of a house mouse is 6 months to 2 years. Pet mice can live up to 3 years with proper care.
When do mice come out? Are mice nocturnal?
Mice are most active at night.
Do mice hibernate in the winter?
No, mice are active throughout winter. They look for warmth, often coming into homes or huddling together and storing food.

Can you have just one mouse as a pet?
No. Mice are social creatures and need a companion to meet their welfare needs.
The PDSA recommends:
Female mice are usually very happy to live with each other and accept unknown females into the group.
Males can live together if they have been together since birth but will rarely accept new males into the group.
One male and one or more female mice often works well, but the male needs to be neutered to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
How many babies can mice have?
They average around 6-8 babies per litter but can have 5-10 litters a year.
Can mice climb walls?
They can! Mice are amazing climbers, but they do need a rough surface to scale, allowing them to hold on with their claws.

Are elephants scared of mice?
Scientists have discovered that this is a myth. It dates back to the ancient Greeks, where they told tales about a mouse who crawled up an elephant’s trunk. This myth was further perpetuated by Disney in Dumbo and in children’s cartoons.
Do mice like cheese?
Another myth, sort of. According to Science Insights, mice are opportunists and would eat cheese if other food sources are scarce, however it has been proven not to be a preference. Adult mice struggle to digest lactose.
Are mice dangerous?
Wild mice can cause health issues, in particular hantavirus, caused by their feces, urine and saliva. There is no evidence that pet mice can transmit hantavirus.
Mice infestations come with additional risk from foodborne illness, mites and ticks and creating safety and fire hazards. In Canada, mice are estimated to cause approximately 15,000 to 30,000 house fires annually.
