Caring For Living Things

OVERVIEW: A very important rule for living things is that they need to stay alive (or else they wouldn’t be living things)! Discover how we look after animals, plants and the planet.

Exploring the diverse requirements of a range of ZooLab animals, we discover that often creatures need the same core things to survive; food, water, oxygen and protection/shelter.

Using active learning techniques and building on prior knowledge this value driven show in teaches respect for all living things.

Learning Outcomes

All children will be able to name some things that animals need to survive (water, food, air).
Most children will be able to name things to do to care for animals and explain why it is important.
Some children will be able to explain the differences in caring for different animals.

What do pets require?

We all love our pets but when it comes to their care there are a few extra things that we need to consider. We all have the responsibility to ensure that the mental and physical needs of animals in their care are up to scratch.

Lets look at The Five Freedoms:

Freedom from hunger and thirst. We need to ensure that our pets have a suitable diet, are fed properly and have access to clean drinking water.
Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from pain, injury or disease. We need to make sure that our pets go to the vets if they are sick or injured.
Freedom to express normal behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animals’ own kind.
Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
