Minibeasts

OVERVIEW: Minibeasts have existed for around 550 million years and make up approximately 97% of creatures on Earth! There are over 25,000 different species in the UK.
During ZooLab’s workshop, children get a fun introduction to invertebrates and classification - these little creatures are quite a big deal. They get to question, investigate and learn about scientific discovery.
This workshop answers all the big questions such as - What do Minibeasts have inside them? Are there any similarities between our bodies and theirs?
Learning Outcomes
All children will be able to define ‘minibeast’.
All children will be able to name some minibeasts.
Most children will be able to correctly identify if an animal is a minibeast.
Some children will be able to use the terminology ‘exoskeleton’, ‘endoskeleton’, ‘vertebrate’ and ‘invertebrate’ in context. (7 years +)

What is a Minibeast?
A Minibeast is a creature without a backbone. In fact, Minibeasts don’t have any bones at all - their bodies have different structures for movement and protection.
Invertebrates come in many shapes and sizes, living in a variety of different habitats in almost all parts of the world. They’re not hard to locate – you can even find them in your garden. These hardy creatures have special adaptations that allow them to live in the toughest of environments. Their hard exoskeleton helps them keep waterproof in wet, damp conditions such as rivers and stops them drying out in hot, sandy environments such as deserts and scrubland.
