Oceans
KS 1, 2. First, Second.
Ages 5 - 11
DURATION:Â 45 mins - 55 mins

OVERVIEW: The ocean is huge. It is vital to all life on Earth, both in the sea and on land. Our ride is here, so let’s climb aboard the submarine and dive right in!
Guided by your ZooLab Ranger and virtual ocean resident, we uncover why the ocean is essential and how we can protect it. Pupils explore the sea zones where we investigate each ecosystem. We learn about its inhabitants and how they have adapted to survive.
Learning Outcomes
All children will understand that the ocean has layers, which affects which animals can live there.
Most children will understand that we need to protect the ocean and suggest how.
Some children will be able to explain how animals are adapted to living in their ocean layer.
You'll get to meet some of these animals:

Why are oceans important?
Oceans are a significant ecosystem, accounting for 2/3 of the Earth’s surface. Oceans help to regulate the climate by producing 70% of our oxygen, absorbing CO2 and regulating temperature. It provides food, resources and jobs, contributing to the global economy.
But sadly, oceans are under threat from pollution. About 8 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year, causing damage to marine life. Chemical pollution causes large blooms of harmful algae, which can be toxic to animals and people.
Overfishing is another problem; huge commercial fishing trawlers patrol the waters with large nets sweeping through the sea, catching hundreds of thousands of fish and more endangered marine life like turtles and sharks.
