They can be found on every continent except Antarctica and have an annual rainfall greater than two meters. There are two different types of rainforest - temperate and tropical. Tropical rainforests are found near the equator and have an average daily temperature of 28°C - the hot, humid atmosphere creates a unique ecosystem full of biodiversity. Rainforests consist of four layers: the forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent layer. Rainforests once covered 14% of Earth’s surface, but this has plummeted to 6% - it is estimated that we lose one and a half acres every second! With over half the planet’s species residing here and it’s importance for climate regulation, it is vital that humanity protects this important resource. A Minibeast is a creature without a backbone. In fact, Minibeasts don’t have any bones at all - their bodies have different structures for movement and protection. Invertebrates come in many shapes and sizes, living in a variety of different habitats in almost all parts of the world. They’re not hard to locate – you can even find them in your garden. These hardy creatures have special adaptations that allow them to live in the toughest of environments. Their hard exoskeleton helps them keep waterproof in wet, damp conditions such as rivers and stops them drying out in hot, sandy environments such as deserts and scrubland. What is a life cycle? Discover growth and animal babies in ZooLab's hands-on EYFS workshop Lifecycles for ages 3–5. Real animals, curious minds, and a whole lot of wonder. Life Cycles EYFS, KS 1, 2. Early Years, First, Second Stage. Ages 3 - 11 DURATION: 45 mins - 55 mins OVERVIEW: T his workshop uses ZooLab animals to discuss birth, growth, reproduction and ageing as we follow a wide variety of different animal life cycles. ‘Life Cycles’ encourages pupils of all ages to understand the natural world . Designed to complement curriculum topics of Animals, including humans and Living things and their habitats, our workshop has a particular focus on living things needing to reproduce to survive. Our presenters adapt this workshop for different stages and ages. Younger audiences will learn about what happens to animals during different sessions. For primary pupils, we introduce concepts such as ‘metamorphosis’, ‘parthenogenesis’, ‘oviparous’, ‘viviparous’ and ‘hibernation’. Ton Pentre Infants School What is a life cycle? A life cycle is defined as the developmental stages that occur during an organism’s lifetime. In general, the life cycles of plants and animals have three basic stages: a fertilised egg or seed, an immature juvenile, and an adult. Some organisms, however, may have more than 3 life cycle stages. Butterflies begin as something completely different! As they grow, they undergo a transformation, known as a "metamorphosis". Frogs and toads also undergo an astonishing metamorphosis! They grow from jelly-like eggs into wriggling tadpoles, and finally grow legs! How does this metamorphosis work? We all love our pets but when it comes to their care there are a few extra things that we need to consider. We all have the responsibility to ensure that the mental and physical needs of animals in their care are up to scratch. Lets look at The Five Freedoms: Freedom from hunger and thirst. We need to ensure that our pets have a suitable diet, are fed properly and have access to clean drinking water. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. Freedom from pain, injury or disease. We need to make sure that our pets go to the vets if they are sick or injured. Freedom to express normal behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animals’ own kind.
