Oceans help to regulate the climate by producing 70% of our oxygen, absorbing CO2 and regulating temperature. It provides food, resources and jobs, contributing to the global economy. But sadly, they are under threat from ocean plastic pollution. About 8 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year, causing damage to marine life. Chemical pollution causes large blooms of harmful algae, which can be toxic to animals and people. Overfishing is another problem; huge commercial fishing trawlers patrol the waters with large nets sweeping through the sea, catching hundreds of thousands of fish and more endangered marine life like turtles and sharks. A li fe cycle is defined as the developmental stages that occur during an organism’s lifetime. In general, the life cycles of plants and animals have three basic stages: a fertilised egg or seed, an immature juvenile, and an adult. Some organisms, however, may have more than 3 life cycle stages. Butterflies begin as something completely different! As they grow, they undergo a transformation, known as a "metamorphosis". Frogs and toads also undergo an astonishing metamorphosis! They grow from jelly-like eggs into wriggling tadpoles, and finally grow legs! How does this metamorphosis work? A Minibeast is a creature without a backbone. In fact, Minibeasts don’t have any bones at all - their bodies have different structures for movement and protection. Invertebrates come in many shapes and sizes, living in a variety of different habitats in almost all parts of the world. They’re not hard to locate – you can even find them in your garden. These hardy creatures have special adaptations that allow them to live in the toughest of environments. Their hard exoskeleton helps them keep waterproof in wet, damp conditions such as rivers and stops them drying out in hot, sandy environments such as deserts and scrubland. College Town Primary School What is biomechanics? Biomechanics is the study of bodily structure, function and mechanics! Bio means life, and mechanics relates to how force equates to movement. Biomechanics examines force exerted by muscles and how it acts with our bones to produce motion. In essence, it examines how living things move. What happens when an animal has no bones? Let’s take a snail for example. A snail’s foot is made up of strong muscles which operate in a wave motion, pushing the snail forward. Within habitats there are micro-habitats - the rainforest has a canopy, forest floor, stream, etc. - each of which has its own ecosystem and a variety of creatures that inhabit it. For a habitat to be effective, it needs five very important things for its occupants to survive: space, air, food, water, and shelter. In order to thrive in particular habitats, living things develop special adaptations. Changing or destroying a habitat can cause devastating effects on the animals and plants which live there. Many thanks for visiting.” Copthorne CofE Junior School Darwin’s theory of natural selection During his visit to the Galapágos Islands, Charles Darwin noted the variety of life between the different islands. 28 years after his expedition, Darwin released has theory of evolution by natural selection; challenging the religious views of the time. Studying the Galapágos finches, mockingbirds and tortoises, Darwin observed that differences in characteristics could be seen between islands. Those which had evolved with adaptions best suited to their habitat were more likely to survive and breed, passing these characteristics on to the next generation (inheritance) to ensure survival of the species. This branch of science is called taxonomy. Vertebrates have a backbone, while invertebrates are those which don't. Usually, people don't think of earthworms or jellyfish as animals, but actually they are, thereby making the animal kingdom classification extremely huge. We all love our pets but when it comes to their care there are a few extra things that we need to consider. We all have the responsibility to ensure that the mental and physical needs of animals in their care are up to scratch. Lets look at The Five Freedoms: Freedom from hunger and thirst. We need to ensure that our pets have a suitable diet, are fed properly and have access to clean drinking water. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. Freedom from pain, injury or disease. Newton-on-Trent CofE Primary School What is an adaptation? An adaptation is defined as an adjustment to an organism to make them better suited to an environment. Animals and plants have developed special characteristics to survive in their particular habitat. Adaptations include biological changes to body functions or structure, behavioural and physiological to change to meet the environment. There are two different types of species - generalist and specialist: generalists are able to thrive in a wide variety of environmental conditions and the specialists can only thrive in a small variety. Adaptations became widely discussed after Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace developed the theory of natural selection - i.e survival of the fittest, where the best adapted life forms survive and pass the most desirable characteristics to offspring.
